At Farncombe School we use a system of synthetic phonics, which means that we teach children to say all the sounds in a word from left to right. They then blend the sounds together to read the word. For example, coin = c oi n, star = s t ar.  We teach all the sounds used in English through ‘Jolly Phonics’ and use a planning scheme from LCP to organise the daily lessons. In 2021, following national updates and a change in guidance on phonics teaching, we began to use Collins Big Cat Phonics for our Reception  teaching of phonics. Collins Big Cat links into our reading scheme, creating a coherent journey into reading for our youngest pupils.

Please try these actions with your child and enjoy the songs together!

The following booklet lists all the sounds and spellings taught each day in ‘Letters and Sounds’. It also includes the high frequency words which children should be able to read and spell during their time in infant school.
